Why Beard Oil for Beardruff Is Ruining Your Grooming

You know you're scratching your arm or cheek during a meeting, then see someones eyes wander to your collar for a split second, before looking away once again. Nobody says anything. Nearly as bad — this has been there for some time and you just noticed. It is an oil you purchased a couple of months ago that seemed to take the edge off, and after about week 4, both the itching and flecks came back.

Most boys fail to remember that it is not always the oil itself that is to blame. You cannot fix several habits that contribute to beardruff with one product alone. Even the best beard oil for beardruff cannot overcome poor application, inconsistent grooming, or a beard care routine that dries out the skin. You can have a great product on your sink and still lose to how you're picking it up, how you're applying it and how you're handling your beard all other hours of the day.

But let's face it, it's not really a beard thing. It's a message that a beard is supposed to convey: put-together, deliberate, in control — as it spits out in reverse. Right here it is that it is actually breaking down.

Here's why scent-first shopping is bringing your skin back down to its former condition. Here's why shopping for scent first is drying your skin out just like it did before.

Most men choose a beard oil as they would choose a cologne, often by the scent of the oil on the test tube, perhaps the name on the bottle, and rarely the ingredients in the oil.

But it's important that it's the skin type and not the scent, which will either soothe or exacerbate flaking. Under a beard, oily skin doesn't require yet another heavy oil to coat its oily skin, nor does a dry skin require more than a light, fast-absorbing oil. Because guys with oily skin that reach for a rich and thick blend end up with more irritation and guys with dry skin under-treating with something that isn't thick enough to make a significant difference, are the ones that are in trouble.

Do a patch test before using a whole bottle:

● Put a little on either the inside of the wrist or jawline.

● Wait for 24 hours and observe if the area is any more oily or red.

● For oily skin apply 3-4 drops per day and for dry skin 6-8 drops per day if there is calmness in the skin.

This is because the weight of the oil is matched with the natural oil production of your skin, so you're not creating excess oiliness or unaddressed dryness, which tends to flake away once the balance is reached.

Beard Oil isn't just about looks; it offers advantages that compromise half of the cost of the Missed Overnight.

If you use oil only on your face in the morning before you leave the door, you're missing the precise time your skin puts in more repair work.

That's important because skin cells are renewed and moisture is regulated in different ways during the night while you're resting, and you don't have sweat, wind or fabrics working against it. If your skin is only exposed during the day, then it is exposed to the elements for a good part of the day and is totally unprotected during its most crucial repair period, the morning. This is NOT a reason to double your total oil consumption — just consume the same amount of oil twice a day instead of once.

Following the last washing of the day, when the skin is slightly moist, apply 4-5 drops directly on the skin in the same manner as you would in the morning and allow it to absorb into the skin for several minutes before going to rest.

The idea is easy to understand: if skin is treated just prior to its most active healing time, the oil is used in conjunction with the body's natural healing process rather than in opposition to it.

Your Beard Brush could be the Cause of the Problem Each Morning

An uncleaned brush is no neutral instrument, it's holding onto all the shit it has pulled out of your beard for weeks.

That's something to think about because residues of products, dried oil, and dead skin all remain trapped in the bristles and are returned to your beard the next time you use the brush, negating whatever exfoliation the brush was supposed to give you. The guys that brush a lot but don't clean the brush, are just brushing the same buildup on a loop again and again.

● Shampoo brushes once per week using a mild shampoo.

● Thoroughly rinse for approximately 30 seconds under warm water.

● Air dry the bristle-down for 4-6 hours prior to the next use.

This is because a clean brush will actually scrub away the dirt, not spread it around, making it a tool that helps your skin rather than works against it.

These are the same as the Oil Year-Round, except that they don't last for an entire year, they only stop working when the season changes.

The same oil you used to keep your beard calm in July may not work in January, but it is not because the formula changed, it's because the environment changed.

Indoor heating dries out the air in winter, just as direct sun and humidity change your need for oil in summer, and what works one season won't work the next. A good oil for a humid summer may not be helpful when dry weather comes, and many men think that their "old oil" stopped working when it didn't.

Once daytime temperatures are above approximately 70°F, switch to a lighter oil, such as grapeseed or squalane, and to a heavier oil, such as shea or argan, when temperatures or indoor heating drop below 50°F for more than a few days in succession.

This is because the product is matched to the actual moisture loss in the environment, rather than requiring one formula to cover the two very different climates.

To love and be loved is the highest blessing. To love and be loved is the greatest blessing.

If you rub your jaw when you think, or scratch when you get an itch rather than with a finger pad, you are putting whatever it is that you are handling right back on the skin that you just rubbed that morning.

Even though it may not seem like it, this is important, since hands touch oil, bacteria and anything else they've been in contact with, directly to irritated skin, and nails can cause micro scratches that irritate and worsen the flaking and redness. Wardrobe itches aren't common occurrences for men, and when they do, it's usually at the same time.

Wash hands prior to any intentional touching of the beard; if itching gets to you, apply one drop of oil to area with fingertip rather than scratching with a nail.

A different product is the same product and so it doesn't aggravate the itch, as it does when you use the same product.

The integration of all things:

A resurfacing beard is almost never due to just one thing but is instead a combination of four or five little, unobtrusive habits going on at the same time. The oil type can be corrected without changing the timing, and the brush can be cleaned without adjusting for the time of year – there was still enough working against them that the cycle continues.

Schedules should be realistic: match your oil to your actual skin type, distribute your oil in the morning and evening, clean your brush weekly to prevent re-seeding, change your oil with the change of season, and never apply your oil to your beard unless you are applying it this way on purpose.

Wait until it is in real time to assess the outcome. Most guys report reduced itching within the first week, a decrease in flecks the third week and a stable, comfortable beard by the sixth week when all of the steps of the process have been implemented rather than just one.

This will not be a complete answer. If the redness, thick scale or itchy symptoms do not improve after a few consistent weeks, it is time for a dermatologist's opinion as conditions like seborrheic dermatitis require more than grooming.

For this version though, the answer isn't a better product, it's better coordination of the products you already have. So the next time you're on the verge of scratching while you're speaking, there is a good chance that no one will focus on your collar.

FAQs

Does beard oil work for beardruff?

Yes, if it is formulated for their skin and applied all over the skin not just the hair. Using the wrong weight oil for your skin type, too heavy or too light for you, will leave flaking just as much as with no oil at all. Typically the only thing that makes the difference is the correct matching of the Product.

For beardruff, how often to apply the beard oil?

The more often the better—double the amount of a workout isn't better—but twice daily is better than once if one day a week is the same amount. A morning application is used for day time exposure and a night time application is used for skin repair during night time. Giving the same total dose twice in a day is better than giving a large dose in the morning.

Do you need to use beard oil and beard balm together to get rid of beardruff?

It is true, they are working on different problems, but they shouldn't be applied on a large scale simultaneously. The best time to use oil is when applied to the skin directly and the best time to use balm is when applied directly to the hair. Applying a small amount of each product, rather than applying 2 heavy products, will not cause clogging or over-oiling of the skin.

Is it unhealthy to change beards oil often?

If you're changing before you've given the new product a chance to do something for you, it can be. It takes about 7-10 days of regular use of any oil before you can tell if it works for your skin. It can be hard to keep track of whether you are doing a better job of flaking or if you are just continuously "abusing" the clock.

Beard oil takes how much time to correct beardruff?

Most men notice a decrease in itching after about the first week, and a noticeable decrease in flaking after about the third week. With regular use, full stabilization (when the turnover cycle of the skin is stable) is found to be around the 6th week. If results fall short after that, it typically indicates a lack of uniformity in the oil type or application method.

Beardruff vs. dry beard?

A natural, non-greasy beard typically will improve right away with hydration, and will start to feel better within a few days. Moisture is typically not the cause of beardruff and often causes it to be worse, causing mild itching or redness under the skin, rather than getting better. If moisturizing doesn't help within two or three weeks, then it's probably from beardruff, not from normal dryness.

Should washing beard brush for beardruff?

Yes, a brush that's never cleaned can put the exact same dead skin and residue back into circulation that it is intended to remove. It should be washed regularly with a mild shampoo, letting it dry thoroughly so that it does what it is supposed to do and not redistribute buildup. Men who brush their teeth frequently tend to see less chipping when they just change their brushes.
